Have you ever thought of how much trash you throw away on a daily basis? Well we have a big family and let me tell you, if every person in our family threw away what the average american throws away every day the world would be over run with trash. Now I am not a “worship the planet” person but I do believe in being a good steward of what God has given us. And I don’t like wasting or trash. I know maybe that is a little weird but we all have our things. So, how many disposable things in your house could you replace? We already don’t have paper napkins, or paper towels, we use dish towels and cloth napkins, I love cloth napkins. I heard about a lady this week who has replaced toilet paper, I don’t want to even entertain THAT thought, but let me know what others you may have.

Ok, I have to ask, you mean someone out there has washable toilet paper? We are on the less waste bandwagon too, no paper plates, etc. but toilet paper? Really?
Penny says
yep, that is what she said!
Penny says
like baby wipes

I used to joke about using cloth TP but then found out that others do it. I guess since I’m already using & washing cloth dipes & wipes for the baby it wouldn’t be hard… but I like the idea of getting a sprayer attachment for the toilet, or even a bidet style toilet. Washing up with water seems way more sanitary than wiping with paper, don’t you think?

We use way too many ziplock bags. I’d like to cut them out of my budget and out of our trash. I buy inexpensive ones but really, what can replace these for all the car trips, ball game snacks, small leftovers and lunches? Any great ideas?

We’re on the way to eliminating paper napkins – I’m on the hunt for some cloth ones on clearance somewhere for when we run out of the paper ones we have on hand – but I’ve got time as we last bought them bulk. We were in a home store yesterday and saw them for $1.99 each, that seems like it’s expensive to me. Any suggestions? I know that some folks sew them themselves but I am in need of learning to sew, so I have no idea what sort of fabric would be good at the store. I’m thinking my first set or two should just be bought somewhere instead. 🙂
The other one I want to eliminate is disposable plastic packages for leftovers and such – it freaks me out the chemicals that could be released in the microwave when we use them. I think I will hit the thrift store and try to find glass ones, or keep an eye out for a set of glass storage containers on sale somewhere as well.
