The Holidays are supposed to be all about celebrating with the folks you love, yet all too often the focus is on the preparations instead of the people and the children especially seem to get lost in the shuffle. If holidays are stressful to you, or you come to the end of the day wondering where and what your children were doing all day, this book is for you. It is a reminder of why we celebrate, and how to celebrate in a more family-friendly way. Memories are made at every holiday, are they good ones or bad ones? Learn how to make them good ones for everyone.
From the inroduction …
“When I was growing up holidays were always disappointing. My parents both worked a lot of hours and although I had a safe and loving upbringing I do regret that I was left alone too much. Mine were wonderful parents but back in those days pursuing the American dream was an a idol to many parents. Then came the holidays and the thought of parents with time for their families seemed possible, but ended up being an unrealistic dream. Parents then spent too much time on the holiday preparations themselves and still neglected their children. Yet all the while they proclaimed that “Holidays are for the children”. for me holidays never lived up to my expectations, and I was always disappointed, and discouraged.”
From Planning a big meal …
“One more thing on planning a big meal, don’t be afraid to create some new traditions. Have you ever taken a poll in your family as to what the favorites are? Are you guilty of just doing the same thing every year without even knowing if anyone likes it? Ask them. Yes all of them. Sit down and have a family discussion including young and old. Ask what is the most meaningful part of the big family holiday meal. You may be surprised. You may want to start some new traditions. You make want to honor some old ones that you thought weren’t important anymore, or maybe got dropped along the years. You may hear some family history and be able to include something that symbolizes a past generation tradition. You’ll never know if you don’t ask. “
There are tips throughout the book such as ….
Family friendly tip– bring a rocking chair in the kitchen. It makes a great place for an older woman to sit or a place to rock an overloaded little one.
