So, what works for me this wednesday? My beloved dairy cows. And also my homemaker Hannah’s incredible photograhic abilities. Isn’t this a great picture?
We currently have 2 cows, one a Jersey (on the left) and a Holstein (on the right). They are very sweet animals but hae a tendancy to get out of the fences. They truly believe the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, and I am convinced that a cow could jump over the moon if she wanted to. But they give great milk, that we also use for butter, cheese, yogurt and so on. Since we have a big family the price of a cow and her upkeep is nowhere near as much as paying for all of the dairy items we would have to buy. Besides which they make our farm look complete. 🙂
Someday, I hope to live on enough land that we can have a dairy cow, too! Currently, we own four shares in a cow, so we get four gallons per week (not enough!) of good, fresh milk. However, I have to travel a half-hour each way to pick it up once per week, and the year’s board on those four shares breaks down to about $6.65 per gallon. My guess is that you pay a lot less than that!
