stash and dash

home sweet home

I would love to say that my house is perfectly organized with no clutter. And in my dreams it is. But there are lots of people in this house, and it is a very old house in a constant state of maintenance and remodel, and there are only so many hours in the day. And hubby’s mom is coming to dinner. So what is our tackle here? The great stash and dash. Old houses do not have big closets, in fact most do not have any closets, they used armoirs or just similar, so stashing in a closet doesn’t work here. But never fear I will find a place. And stash I will and the dash to another room to do the same. Want to learn how? Well you start with the entry way to the entry folks use. If you never use the front door, don’t start there. It must be a Southern Hospitality thing, NOBODY uses the front door here. We all use a side door or a back door. Anyway start there, anything that looks cluttery, stash it somewhere. Preferably at the opposite end of the house. Then walk from that entry to the kitchen, and to the main sitting place, and do the same. Clear all pathways, walkways, and piles of things that you may use everyday but make the space look messy. Then dust, vacuum, and sweep and mop, do the bathrooms and make sure the kitchen has more yummy taste-ables than meals in progress and you are in business.  If you don’t have time, dont worry about the areas no one is going to see. Make sure bedrooms look clean enough from the doorway. But send more time on the actual visiting area.

My hubby has gotten much better over the years but he used to get really obsessive about his mom coming. Yes I have scrubbed baseboard with a toothbrush before . But you cannot have 7 children in Martha Stewart’s house and still have it look like Martha Stewart’s house, so you have to be realistic. You can however have it look good for one day. To make hubby happy. So for hubby we tackle this Tuesday.

    Penny,
loved the “stash and dash” ideas and with 7 children it is impossible to have it in total order. I can’t do it with the 2 children left in our home! We have stashed things in drawers and cabinets though in the past as we anticipated company. I so related to your post today. -God bless, Laurie
