awe and wonder and the Nativity Story

We recently watched The Nativity Story. I really like it, it was pretty true to scripture with some artistic license taken but nothing that hindered the story. Mary was believable, young, innocent, even if she did have a funny accent. Joseph, made me actually appreciate Joseph like I never have. There were several “God coincidences” and those knowing looks between folks who understand the hugeness of God at work. But what I appreciated the most was the incredible acting or maybe it was a real life miracle of when the wise men realized what they been seeking was God Himself in a non threatening meek  human form. And they had found Him. That look of awe and wonder, that realization of who He is. That is priceless whether on screen or live. To see someone’s eyes opened is almost like being born again yourself. Again ;) .

wish list for Jesus again

This is actually an excerpt from our ministry newsletter printed in 2000, but I hunted it down for you because it is worth repeating.

As we are now into the busiest time of the year for most people, I urge you to stop, take a moment,(or 5 or 60) and spend some time with Jesus. What does Christmas mean to you? Is it about Jesus, or tradition of man? For most of you, you’ll answer, “it’s about Jesus”, yet we can get so busy we forget all about Him. Have you spent more time wrapping presents than you have in prayer? Have you spent more time shopping than witnessing? Have you decorated your house but forgotten to put the “garment of praise” on yourself? Have you bought presents for everyone but the one whose birthday it is supposed to be? Is it time for a change? Am I really starting to get to you? To begin with Christmas really has nothing to do with the Lord, and if the original apostles were still around they would not distract from the Lord’s work to celebrate it. Most theologians will tell you Jesus was probably born in the fall not winter, but the time is not told us exactly in scripture for the very reason that we would make it the event it has now become. But, since in America we are already distracted, and have already made an “event” out of it, let’s use it to His advantage! This is one of the few times of the year people will listen about Jesus. Here is my year 2000 suggestion list for gifts for Jesus,

  • Our favorite!! Write a love letter to Jesus, keep them until Christmas day then read them as a family
  • give a Jesus video to each of your neighbors and family members
  • Find a busy shopping corner, get the children singing carols, read the Christmas story from scripture and then keep reading, go right through the crucifixion then ask the crowd if there are any questions or prayer requests, all this should be done loud enough to hear from a distance, but not obnoxiously
  • invite a few ‘lonesome friends” for supper and share the love of Jesus with them
  • write down your testimony, the whole story, then give it to your parents, grown children, and any unsaved family members
  • give a monetary gift (sacrifice, make it hurt) to a ministry, missionary, or homeless mission that really shares the gospel, not toys to needy children, but to somewhere that shares JESUS to the broken ones
  • give your time at a mission or other place that shares the gospel
  • spend a day fasting and praying for your community
  • write a love song to Jesus and teach it to your family
  • have tracts printed and pass them out
  • give the Lord that one thing He keeps asking you for (time, chocolate, cigarettes, t.v., your new truck,) whatever is getting between you and Him, your idols
  • buy bibles instead of other gifts
  • all of these ideas require some prayer before hand, that is giving Jesus the gift He most desires,

your attention!!!! just to spend time with you!!!!!

salad is good for you

and boy does my daughter know how to make them, no longer can I order a salad when going out to eat, which I don’t really do anymore anyway, because a salad anywhere else would be a great disappointment :(

combating chaos

my article from Titus 2 at The Well today
The Holidays, especially the time before Thanksgiving and Christmas can be really stressful and sometimes difficult for maintaining family life. There are lots of events, and added parties and family visits. There is the excitement in the air, and all that sugar! Yummy desserts at every turn.

We don’t even celebrate Christmas as a big event, in fact all we do is a big family meal but still you can feel it in the air. The parades, and sales, and family pictures and company coming over. While all that excitement can be fun, it can also be over exciting for some.

Children are wired differently, some go with the flow and some can barely cope. We recently had a couple of our children ride their horses in a parade in our small town and even though they ride in horse shows all the time it was something new. I didn’t realize until one of my other children mentioned it that my nearly 15 year old daughter was so over excited that she never ate all day. She couldn’t. She was just too wound up to even eat. You couldn’t tell on the outside, she was exercising great self control. It isn’t just the little ones that get over excited.

One of the best ways we can to help our families to enjoy fun family times is too keep to our regular schedules or routines as much as possible. Children need to know what comes next, little children and sometimes big children. Anxiety comes from being unprepared. If they know what to expect they can cope better. When they don’t cope well, they tend to irritate Momma.

Have you ever had a 6 or 7 year old ask the same question over and over on a hectic day? That child is feeling uneasiness. If you will take them aside and get them to quiet down and talk to them and find out what their concerns are, often you can solve the problem. Sometimes they will keep asking as a means of getting attention. Sometimes they just want a conversation with Momma and that is the only way they know how to start it.

Here are some tips for keeping peace and sanity before or between Holidays.

  1. post a family calendar in a public place in your house, like the refrigerator, have all events on it, use pictures if you have pre-readers
  2. make a to-do list for busy days, teach your children to cross off each item as it is accomplished
  3. always always start each day with prayer
  4. have some point in each day where everyone is present together for prayer, and family announcements and coinciding schedules
  5. plan events that are important and fits everyone’s schedules, do not overbook yourselves
  6. keep the sugar and packaged foods and junk to a minimum, except for preplanned indulgences
  7. did I remind you to pray?
  8. if you have pre-readers go over the daily schedule with them each morning, including the weather report
  9. if you are having a big meal at your house print out a menu

We sometimes forget that when we tell a child, “get ready we are going to Grandmas house” that they don’t always know what that means. Yes they can dress themselves but will it be a hot day or a cold day, will they be looking pretty or playing? When are they going, right after breakfast or later in the afternoon? Such questions can be very stressful to a little person. It helps to break it down for them. And oftentimes for big folks too?

The best way to cope with pre-holiday or post-holiday stress is to combat it with familiar routine. Back to basics. The traffic and chaos at the stores is bad enough, we don’t need it at home. And did I remind you to pray? :)
