Well before I tell you what works for me this Wednesday, let me tell you what DOESN”T work. This weather! Here in a nutshell is the special weather statement for our area. Yesterday they were using the phrase “shockingly cold” today it has changed to “bitterly cold”.
BITTERLY COLD TEMPERATURES ARE HEADED FOR THE MID STATE…
… AND COLD WEATHER SAFETY WILL BE A MUST…
THE EDGE OF A LARGE… AND FRIGID… ARCTIC HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL ENTER THE MID STATE LATE TODAY… AND THEN SPREAD ACROSS THE AREA TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING. LOW TEMPERATURES WILL DROP INTO THE TEENS TONIGHT… BUT WILL PLUNGE TO BETWEEN ZERO AND FIVE DEGREES THURSDAY NIGHT. SOME OF THE NORMALLY COLDER LOCATIONS COULD SEE READINGS SLIP A FEW DEGREES BELOW ZERO. WIND CHILL READINGS WILL RANGE BETWEEN ZERO AND TEN BELOW THURSDAY THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING. TEMPERATURES THIS COLD CAN POSE A NUMBER OF DANGERS…
… MOST IMPORTANTLY… IT CAN SERIOUSLY AFFECT YOUR HEALTH. EXTENDED EXPOSURE TO BITTER COLD CAN CAUSE FROSTBITE OR HYPOTHERMIA. IF POSSIBLE… STAY INDOORS. IF YOU HAVE TO GO OUTSIDE… LIMIT YOUR TIME IN THE COLD… AND BUNDLE UP WITH COAT… CAP… AND GLOVES.
Now, I remind you we live in the south. In TN, you know, where the birds come to escape cold weather. So what works for me this week? Chili, chicken and dumplins, lots of hot cocoa, warm tea, the Waltons on DVD, long walks on the treadmill, board games. And keeping a close eye on the ones doing outside chores. Horses have to be fed and watered (after the ice is broken) and the cow needs milking, (to keep us in cocoa). Thank you Lord for Carhartt Coveralls.
What do ya’ll do when it gets down to zero degrees?

Stay warm, Penny! We’re supposed to hit 34 today but it’s about 21 right now. Tomorrow our high (HIGH) is supposed to be 17, and Friday…14!! We might be schooling in bed under the down comforter.

Well, we live in Michigan, where the last frost date sometimes occurs near the fourth of July 😉 so we know cold.
What works for me? anything hot to eat or to bake. I am trying to lose weight and also with my shoulder injury, I am not making bread like I normally do, so that is out, but I have made a lot of soup lately, which is always good. My two favorites are: Beef or Chicken noodle soup, especially some with homemade noodles or spaetzel. I recently made (yesterday) some Finnochio Del La Pomadora (a soup with Fennel, tomatoes, and chicken in it)
Maybe the birds are going to have to fly even further south, eh, Penny?

yep and I might follow them 🙂 it is hard enough to keep this old house warm enough when it gets to 30, much less zero! Does your’s stay warm enough?

Our house doesn’t stay “warm enough” ;). We have gas heat, set to about 60 F, plus electric heaters we use in some of the drafty rooms (such as when one is taking a hot bath…I heat the room up first). We have gotten used to it being around 60-65 in the house and have found we are sick less often (even the germs don’t like it ha ha). We just dress for the weather. We wear layers…undershirts, sweaters, covered legs. I even have cable knit tights.
When I do more baking that also warms the house. Tonight I think we’ll make some pizza. The kids are going to have to knead the dough though as the shoulder is very painful today. I see the surgeon on the 27th.
