When I found out Kathy Brodock at Teaching Good Things had put out a DVD that teaches how to decorate cakes, I knew we had to have it. I have not been disappointed! I was a little fearful that it would be too much of a “professional course”, that I would have to learn and then turn around and teach my daughters. That is one drawback with so much homeschool curriculum, that the parent has to completely learn it first. I have several children and that approach just doesn’t work for me. If it is something I don’t know, I need to be able to learn it WITH them.
Well my fears were completely put to rest with Kathy’s teachings. Before I tell you what she teaches let me tell you HOW she teaches it. First of all she has a very pleasant voice, smooth, I could listen to her all day. We are not all gifted with pleasant voices, but it sure is a blessing in a teaching audio or video. Along with Kathy’s pleasant voice is her manner, again very pleasant. She starts at the beginning, the very beginning, but doesn’t talk down to her viewers. She includes the meanings of terms used, and recipes, and describes the tools needed. She teaches several techniques in a very simple step by step way that makes the viewer think, “Yes, I CAN do this
” . She even shows mistakes and how to fix them! I love that, I don’t want it edited out when there is a mistake. I want to feel like I am right there with the teacher as she spends the afternoon with just I and my daughters. Kathy accomplishes this very well. We all felt like we were standing in her kitchen. I love her “Learn to decorate cakes” DVD and give it an A+.
No matter what level of cake decorating you are at this will make a very good addition to your kitchen library.
The Learn to Decorate Cakes DVD, along with her Learn to Crochet DVD (which I will review next Thursday) can be purchased here. They also have several other wonderful resources, more for homemaking (even quilting) but also plenty for sons. Take a look at Teaching good Things.
